Paradigm shifting in
Applied Linguistics:
New theories and new methods

Annual Conference of the Irish Association for Applied Linguistics (IRAAL), Trinity College Dublin, Ireland

Saturday 19 November, Trinity Long Room Hub

The IRAAL annual conference aims to bring together all sectors of applied linguistics in Ireland. In light of this year’s conference theme, we encourage submissions that deal with contemporary and emerging theoretical and methodological approaches to the study of first and second language acquisition, second and foreign language learning, language teaching, policy, curricula and assessment, e-learning and CALL. Submissions from early career researchers are particularly welcome, including postgraduate students engaged in Master’s and Ph.D. projects. The conference programme will also include roundtable discussions on academic publishing, on grant proposals and on career development.

Plenary speaker: Dr Françoise Blin, Dublin City University. Dr Blin is a Senior Lecturer in French in the School of Applied Language and Intercultural Studies. She is the President of the European Association for Computer Assisted Language Learning (EUROCALL) and the co-editor of ReCALL, published by Cambridge University Press. She has been teaching French and researching the use of technology in language teaching and learning for over 30 years.

We are seeking submissions for two types of presentations:

  • INDIVIDUAL PAPERS: Papers are formal presentations on original research by one or more authors within a 20-minute period. Paper presentations will be organized into sessions of 2/3 papers.
  • LIGHTNING TALKS: Lightning talks will be held prior to the plenary talk and serve the purpose to inspire an audience on issues and practices in applied linguistics and language teaching, with a focus on the future. The talks will follow a ‘TED-talk’ format and will be 5 to 7 minutes long.

Call for Contributions: Please submit an abstract of not more than 200 words, including a title of no more than 20 words, your name, affiliation and email address to [email protected] before the submission deadline of 30 September 2016. Please clearly state the presentation category (paper or lightning talk) in your abstract. Abstracts will be blind-reviewed, and presenters informed by 14 October. Deadline for registration: 1 November 2016.
Conference fees:
25 Euro for IRAAL members (15 Euro for full-time students, retired, unwaged)
65 Euro for non-IRAAL members (35 Euro for full-time students, retired, unwaged)
Please visit www.iraal.ie/membership to become an IRAAL member.
