Reviving ELSTA

18/11/2018

The English Language Support Teachers Association (ELSTA, established 2006) asks for your support in their effort to revive the association.
The revival of ELSTA is necessary as teachers of general subjects have expressed frustration at the lack of training in English as an Additional Language (EAL). The suspicions that EAL students are not reaching their potential in Irish schools were copper fastened in recent days, when the results of Unicef’s Report Card 15 were published.

Please read more in the letter from ELSTA below and sign it by November 23rd if you are in favour of a revival of the group.

Our letter to the DES regarding under-representation of third level institutions on FLAG

19/9/2018

One Voice for Languages, the inclusive and representative body for all languages across all education sectors, and IRAAL, the Irish Association for Applied Linguistics, wish to bring to your attention the current under-representation by language practitioners from Institutes of Technology and Universities on the Foreign Language Advisory Group.

We appreciate that currently the Teacher Training Sector is representing third level at FLAG. However, representation from other strands of third level education would be logical, especially since the Foreign Language Strategy envisages a substantial increase of students studying a modern language at third level. This increase is only feasible, if a broader spectrum of viewpoints from across third level language education is represented.

Hence, we would welcome the addition of colleagues from third level institutions to join FLAG and help make the 10-year-plan become reality.
