Talk: Speech and language disorders and the multilingual classroom (10.30am to 11.15am)
This lecture outlines the latest research findings concerning bilingualism, language learning and language impairment. In this session, participants will learn about some of the most common types of speech and language impairment, and will learn about the identification of speech and language difficulties in simultaneous bilingual children and in children who learn a second language during the primary school years.
About the speaker: Francesca La Morgia is a lecturer in Clinical Speech and Language Studies, with a specialism in bilingual language acquisition. Before joining Trinity College, she lectured in UCD, DCU and the University of Reading, where she was also responsible for the English branch of Bilingualism Matters. She is the founder of Mother Tongues, and training and consultancy service aimed at disseminating accurate and up to date information on different aspects of bilingualism among families and professionals.

Taster lesson in Georgian (11.15am to 12pm)
During this workshop, you will learn about about Georgia, the Georgian language and its alphabet, culture and traveling. You will also learn some Georgian. Participants should feel free to ask questions.
Workshop: Innovation in the Language Classroom (11.15am to 12pm)
Seán Greif founded Moontour two years ago with the intention to revolutionise the way we teach the Irish language. Last year Moontour won the European Language Label award as one of the most innovative language teaching initiatives in Europe. In this workshop, Seán shares some ideas for stimulating language learning at home and in the classroom. Suitable for parents & teachers.
Talk: One language at school, another language at home (12pm to 12.45pm)
My child goes to school in English, but we speak another language at home. How can we help him strive in both languages? In which language should I help with the homework? The school teacher tells me I should stop speaking my home language, what should I do? At school, my child has been diagnosed with language acquisition problem, is it because he is bilingual? If not, what should I do?
Those questions and many more will be answered during the workshop: One language at school, another language at home. We will be looking at how to manage the proper balance between the two languages (or three sometimes) without stressing and helping our children. Do not forget, a language is an investment for the future, do not give them up.

Project talk: Intercultural storytelling (12pm to 12.45pm)
In the mobile world of today, many people leave their home countries for a variety of reasons. In our communities, some newcomers and long term migrants are isolated, dislocated, and struggle with socialising and human contact in their daily lives. This workshop will introduce and outline an innovative, simple and fun way to build community between newcomers and locals through intercultural, autobiographical storytelling. Apart from the obvious social benefits, narrative sharing also helps migrants who struggle with language and literacy, while at the same time giving locals fascinating insights into other worlds and journeys. An inner-city version of this project is already running in Dublin 3 and will shortly be set up at DCU with refugees from direct provision at Mosney. This type of project, created by applied linguist Dr Peter Sheekey, would be of interest to community workers, teachers – especially of language, volunteers and members of the community at large who wish to make a difference.
Talk: Live, love, learn languages at junior cycle; an insight into the new Specification for Modern Foreign Languages (12.45pm to 13.30)
The Specification for Modern Foreign Languages aims to enable students to explore the interdependence between language and culture, to develop their appreciation of the relevance of languages to their lives for personal, social, educational, vocational and leisure purposes, and to derive enjoyment from language learning. This workshop gives an insight into what this means in practice for teachers, students and parents. Workshop: Enjoy Learning Irish with Moontour (12.45pm to 13.30)
Moontour teaches Irish differently. This workshop will show you the most fun and exciting ways to learn Irish. We will practice what we know through games, virtual reality and much more. Suitable for students aged 8 - 14 who hate or love Irish, and everything in between (equally enthusiastic or unenthusiastic parents are also more than welcome).
